"Old formulations" of Fioricet contained 50 mg of butalbital, 325 mg of acetaminophen and 40 mg caffeine; "new formulations" contain 50 mg of butalbital, 300 mg of acetaminophen and 40 mg caffeine. Manufacturers were allowed to make the "old formulation" of fioricet until January 1, 2014.
Fioricet is indicated for the relief of the symptom complex of tension (or muscle contraction) headache. Evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of this combination product in the treatment of multiple recurrent headaches is unavailable. Caution in this regard is required because butalbital is habit-forming and potentially abusable.
• The FDA has determined that Fioricet and Fioricet with Codeine with 300 mg of acetaminophen have the same therapeutic effect as the discontinued products, which contained 325 mg of acetaminophen. • Generic butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine and butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine/codeine are also available in the new 300 mg strengths.
